When it comes to child safety
and sports, the proper equipment is only the beginning. There are many other components to
be built into a quality youth sports program -- and parents should be aware of them. The
checklist below to find out just how safe your community sports program is, courtesy of
the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (www.nyssf.org).
School and recreational coaches are
certified in CPR and first aid.
Background checks are done on coaches
before they are hired.
The coach has a written emergency plan
and has rehearsed what to do in case of an accident.
There is a first-aid box and ice at all
practices and games.
The coach has kids do warm-ups,
stretching and cool-down exercises.
The coach distributes a conditioning
program before sign-ups so children know what is expected of them.
Health education programs discuss
sports injury prevention.
Physicals are required to participate
in sports.
Facilities are examined regularly for
safety
The team has a parents' code of
conduct.
Safety equipment is available and
required. It fits properly, meets national standards and is in good condition.
