What will 2012 Hold?
It is that time of year when we, as artists and
crafters, set down and plan our next years schedule of shows. If you
are like many in the business, you are wondering if there is going to
be any money in the craft business in 2012. The last few years have
been hard for crafters. Yet there are those who have continued to make
money year after year. You can see them selling at every show. Some,
because their items are under priced, others because they have a most
unique item.
We ask ourselves if we should change our work
and do something that may sell better. Questioning our work is always a
good idea, except when it is done in desperation. We need to make an
income but we must be true to our craft. As you analyze your work,
study what you did sell last year. Did you run out of the best sellers?
Did you keep making what was selling or did you try to constantly come
up with new items.
You must remember, you are in a business. Like
a restaurant, you must sell what the customers want, when he wants it.
You can offer new menu items, but if the customer does not want them
and you don't have what they do want, you end up without a sale. Look
at what sold. Ask what made time popular. Make sure that this
year you have more of those items than you did last year. And when
something sells, do it again. If it stops selling, do not keep making
more!
You can make money in the craft business if you are a good businessperson.
